Operates power sewing machines to sew items that require frequent alignments and positioning but does not affect basic fit. Does top stitching and repairs or alters wearing apparel where appearance is important in the finished product. Sews small units such as pocket flaps, shoulder loops, patch pockets which involve topstitching, square corners, or curved edges. Operates buttonhole machine to make buttonholes in shirts, trousers, and similar articles. May appliqu designs on flags, guidons, and brassards taking care to follow the exact contours of the design; double-needle joining operations of straight edges taking care to match lines and seams. Blind stitches hems or top stitches chevrons on uniforms. Repairs work clothes or similar utility items involving judgment in matching sizes and colors and replacing parts, i.e., replacing zippers in field jackets or sleeping bags; matching materials in patching faded wearing apparel.Performs other related duties as assigned. Ability to perform sewing of irregular shapes, blind stitching, distributing simple fullness, serging or double-needle joining of straight edges which requires dexterity, frequent alignments and preciseness in techniques. Most materials sewed are cotton, polyester-cotton blends, or similar fabrics which are easily held in place for stitching. Occasionally works on rayon, nylon, or woolen materials which are more difficult to sew because they tend to slip, slide, pucker, or stretch.When altering items, operators work according to an alteration ticket, fitter's pins, chalk marks, or verbal instruction. In repairing items for serviceability, are responsible for locating and mending obvious defects. Work is reviewed for accuracy, neatness, and to see if instructions are followed.Sits for long periods with continual movement of hands, arms, and fingers in placing items in position and sewing. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance. Work is performed inside in well-lighted and ventilated areas. Areas are often noisy because numerous machines are operating at one time. Subject to possible needle punctures and minor cuts.
