com General Description:
The City of Jacksonville is offering an exciting opportunity within the Transportation Department for someone interested in a career in urban or transportation planning.
The Transportation Planner performs intermediate professional and administrative work on current and long-range multi-modal transportation planning projects.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the MPO Administrator.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Assists with the coordination and preparation of multi-modal transportation planning activities, conducts research, maintains records and prepares technical reports/presentations as needed.

)Assists with professional and administrative support to the Jacksonville MPO Transportation Advisory Committee and Technical Coordination Committee Assists with the development and maintenance of the Jacksonville MPO Urban Planning Work Program, Long-Range Transportation Plan, Travel Demand Model, Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program and other transportation-related planning projects as assigned.
Reviews assigned site and subdivision development plans for compliance with transportation plans and policies.
Participates on the City's Technical Review Committee.
Researches and prepares grant applications for transportation projects.
Participates in the design, planning, and implementation of projects that expand and enhance the City's multi-modal transportation system.
Establishes collaborative working relationship with NCDOT and other local agencies to create partnership opportunities for transportation initiatives.
Performs compilation, editing, maintenance, extraction, and application of geographic data; revises features of existing maps as instructed and corrects simple maps in various stages of compilation.
Performs other related tasks as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and work experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, engineering, public administration or related field and 6 months to 2 years professional experience in urban planning or transportation planning.
Professional experience may include academic projects, course work, or internship relevant to the use of urban or transportation planning tools and software.
Transportation Department:
The department is comprised of three divisions responsible for the efficient movement of goods and services within the metropolitan planning area.
Jacksonville Transit division offers riders Fixed and Express Routes throughout the City of Jacksonville with stops located downtown, at the Jacksonville Mall and other area shopping centers, colleges, Onslow Memorial Hospital, memorials, various neighborhoods, and area military bases.
The Jacksonville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (JUMPO) division is the regional transportation planning agency for the urbanized area which encompasses the County.
JUMPO is composed of officials from the City of Jacksonville, Onslow County, and area military installations as well as the North Carolina Board of Transportation.
JUMPO facilitates a cooperative, comprehensive and continuing transportation planning process that serves as the basis for the expenditure of all federal transportation funds in the area for streets, highways, bridges, public transit, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
The Jacksonville Intelligent Transportation System division was created to provide citizens with improved traffic flow on the city's busiest corridors.
This is accomplished by a combination of continuous traffic signal monitoring, a CCTV system, and collection of real time travel condition data.
All information is sent to the Traffic Operations Center where Traffic Management staff analyze and optimize traffic signal timing to minimize congestion and maximize flow.
City staff also have the ability to make immediate changes to mitigate back-ups caused by road construction, vehicle accidents, and adverse weather conditions.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION General knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning and transportation planning; ability to provide professional staff to public bodies; ability to read and interpret site development plans and engineered drawings; ability to gather and interpret technical and statistical information and prepare technical repots; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with public officials and the general public.
Experience with Metropolitan Planning Organizations is preferred along with a familiarity of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
